The earliest memory that I have of Raider is from when I was about five years old. I was sick — I think it might have been when I had the chicken pox — and I remember he was sleeping on the bed with me. It’s a strange thing to remember. I don’t know why I do.

Raider was a mix between a Corgi and a Chihuahua. He was also devoted to my mother. The rest of us were handy when a door needed to be opened, but my mother was his favourite person in the world. He wouldn’t eat unless she was there. He wouldn’t sleep or go outside. If my mother was not home, Raider’s life was devoted to waiting for her to come back. Leaving him at the kennel while we went on vacation was an nightmare for him.

Raider died in 1996. He had been ill for quite a while, and he was no longer able to get himself up and down the stairs. He went to the vet for a check-up and never came home.

After that, Mum was pretty devastated and she said that we would never get a pet again. Of course, several years later, we brought Angel home. The crazy thing? Julia says that she has no memories of Raider, and yet she gravitated towards a dog that is a dead-ringer for him. Same face, same coloring. I think people remember more about their childhoods than they think.
