making life mean life

Am I the only person who thinks that a life sentence should last for the length of an inmate’s life?

An article in today’s New York Times describes how there has been an increase in the amount of prisoners who literally live the rest of their lives in prison, leaving only in coffins.

I’m not sure where the problem with that is. I’ve always thought that it seems a little ridiculous to sentence someone to “life in prison” and then let them out in ten years. That’s not life, and in most cases that punishment does not fit the crime. I don’t think it would be uncalled for to have a murderer spend the rest of his natural life locked up behind bars. To be honest, I would much rather see that than live in a country that allows capital punishment.
