the moose calls it quits

Mark Messier is calling it quits. The 44-year-old announced his retirement Monday, ending a career that stretched 25 NHL seasons and produced six Stanley Cup rings and the second most points in NHL history.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with Mark Messier. During his Ranger years, he had the unmitigated gall to beat my Canucks in the Stanley Cup finals. I never really forgave him for that. But I was also able to appreciate the fact that he was really a great hockey player.

I’m actually glad to see him leave the game now. Too often, these guys wait until their bodies are falling apart and they can no longer really contribute before calling it quits. It’s nice to see someone leave on top. With that said, this upcoming season just isn’t going to be the same without him.
