out of left field

I’ve been waiting to hear the announcement that the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, William H. Rehnquist, would be resigning due to his bad health. I was shocked to hear that it is going to be someone else altogether.

Although she is a Republican and has mostly conservative views, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor could often be found upholding the rights of women and minority, against the recommendations of her own party. She believes in a women’s right to choose, she permitted public aid and vouchers to religious and parochial schools, and she supported the limiting of affirmative action. She basically believed in the same things that I do, which is why I think I will miss seeing her influence on the court.

So, for the first time in over ten years, there is a vacancy on the court. God only knows who Dubya is going to nominate, but I can guarantee that it will be no one in the same league as Justice O’Connor.
