No, you’re not the only one. A Toronto radio host (who pronounces “Liberal” as if it is an obscenity) claimed that it MUST have been intended to be a military backpack (although he, too, was judging it based on a black-and-white image — was the original in colour?), even describing it at one point as “camouflage”. Even if it IS in olive drab or khaki green, I remember that a lot of students in my day (long, long ago) used to carry stuff they bought in surplus stores. And clothing and accessories made to resemble military gear have been popular on and off for decades. But no, Hedy Fry’s staff MUST have intended it to be a reference to the military, or if they didn’t, they MUST be hapless fools. (He also complained that the pamphlet had shown up in Toronto. He hasn’t complained about the Calgary Conservative stuff that has been showing up in Toronto for months, of course.)

My opinion of the general intelligence of the populace goes down every time something like this becomes a Hot Issue. Alas, the Republican-style Negative Innuendo Campaign has become the standard here, at least for the Conservatives (especially post-Mike Harris). (Okay, the Liberal “soldiers on the streetcorners” thing was pretty silly, too, but they didn’t build entire campaigns on it…)
